HIX at The Tramshed for roast chicken, steak and a bit of Damien Hirst

27 May 2012

A couple of interesting trends seem to have emerged from the recession-era London restaurant scene. First there was the “no reservations” approach resulting in the phenomenon of “Food Groupies” queuing for an hour in order to sample the latest trendy burger (or other such dish), tweeting while they wait and generating further buzz.

And now there seems to be a trend emerging towards “no-choice” (or “limited-choice”) menus. I suppose it makes perfect sense when it is not uncommon these days for a particular must-eat dish to be the talk of the town across the social media world. Not to forget the London street food scene (which is surging in popularity these days), where stallholders mainly specialise in one kind of dish anyway. So I suppose it was only a matter of time before the restaurateurs caught on and perfected one or two dishes only for their menu.

HIX at The Tramshed opened on Wednesday and is London’s most recent restaurant to adopt the “limited-choice” approach. The latest in chef and restaurateur Mark Hix’s line of restaurants, they offer roast chicken and sirloin steak on their menu. And fortunately they do take reservations. (more…)

The Life Aquatic with Lucky Chip

27 Nov 2011

Not that I mean to turn this into a Burger Blog but amazing burgers are something which I’ve definitely been pleased to notice are becoming quite an exciting trend in London. I’ve visited the Lucky Chip burger wagon a couple of times now – but the journey from my house in North London is always a little too far, the wait is always a little too long and someone always seems to be trying to jump ahead of me in queue. The hunger induced grumpiness certainly doesn’t help either!

However after one bite of today’s special burger with it’s crispy, deep fried, battered soft shell crab, all crabbiness instantly dissolved, along with the memory of every burger I’ve ever eaten. This was the Bill Murray Life Aquatic Surf ‘n Turf Burger.

It took me a couple of attempts to get the film, but there was no struggle getting the burger! There were so many amazing flavours going on; the crispiness of the fresh soft shell crab, the creaminess of the spicy mayo, the saccharine zing of the sweet chilli, the cool guacamole and spring onions and the trademark succulent beef patty blanketed in oozing cheese… it was love at first bite! Kêu! It’s a knock out!

15 Apr 2011

After getting tanked up to our eyeballs with caffeine at The London Coffee Festival over the weekend, we decided it would probably be wise to go for some lunch. Enter Kêu! Vietnamese for “That’s Fantastic!” and specialists in that fine Vietnamese baguette sandwich people just love to get obsessive about, bánh mì. Recently opened in Old Street, Shoreditch the owner also boasts neighbouring restaurants Cây Tre and Viet Grill under his belt.

Vietnamese Cookery Class at Fernandez and Leluu

15 Feb 2011

What an amazing day of eating it was at the Fernandez and Leluu Vietnamese Cookery Class. Run by Uyen (the Vietnamese cuisine connoisseur of supper club extraordinares Fernandez and Leluu)  I can gladly say that it had the same friendly, informal feel of their lovely supper club and we ended up being very, VERY well fed. But what’s more we also got to be behind the scenes! Great fun!

My Year of Food 2010: Part 3

9 Jan 2011

Here is my final post in the My Year of Food 2010 series with the last lot of foodie highlights from the past year:

Fernandez and Leluu (30th October 2010)

After first hearing about Secret Supper Clubs in London two years ago I was excited to be finally attending one last year, Fernandez and Leluu located in East London.  Run fortnightly by friendly couple Simon and Uyen, their dishes are influenced by their respective birth places of Spain and Vietnam.  Not knowing quite what to expect I found it had the lovely informal atmosphere of going to dinner at a friend of a friend’s house; hugely welcoming with plenty of opportunities to meet new people.

On the night we attended they were doing a charity dinner for Action Against Hunger in association with food brand Unearthed.  Quite a few of their dishes during our 6 course meal incorporated ingredients from Unearthed, and we even got to take home some surplus products at the end of the meal.  I must say it felt great to be stuffing our faces with delicious food knowing it was all for a good cause.
