Fifteen Pickles

Following on from the success of the MEATwagon and MEATliquor, the same team have opened up a new burger joint in town. Located in Jubilee Market, Covent Garden the place has been given the very appropriate name MEATmarket. I popped down on their opening day on Thursday to check it out.

If MEATliquor is a dark burger dungeon, then MEATmarket is it’s polar opposite – it’s brighter twin brother, bathed in fluorescent lighting and decorative signage and situated in the heavens that is the balcony overlooking the tat and crafts of Jubilee Market. Seemingly modelled on fast food chains, MEATmarket comes across much more accessible and family friendly version of it’s evil twin.  (more…)

Not that I mean to turn this into a Burger Blog but amazing burgers are something which I’ve definitely been pleased to notice are becoming quite an exciting trend in London. I’ve visited the Lucky Chip burger wagon a couple of times now – but the journey from my house in North London is always a little too far, the wait is always a little too long and someone always seems to be trying to jump ahead of me in queue. The hunger induced grumpiness certainly doesn’t help either!

However after one bite of today’s special burger with it’s crispy, deep fried, battered soft shell crab, all crabbiness instantly dissolved, along with the memory of every burger I’ve ever eaten. This was the Bill Murray Life Aquatic Surf ‘n Turf Burger.

It took me a couple of attempts to get the film, but there was no struggle getting the burger! There were so many amazing flavours going on; the crispiness of the fresh soft shell crab, the creaminess of the spicy mayo, the saccharine zing of the sweet chilli, the cool guacamole and spring onions and the trademark succulent beef patty blanketed in oozing cheese… it was love at first bite! It’s been a little while since my last blog post. Various factors have made it tricky for me to find the time recently, but it certainly hasn’t prevented me from eating! But what better way to tentatively take a step or two back on the blogging wagon than with a quick and dirty recount of my meal at the opening of Meat Liquor earlier this evening?

From the folks behind The Meatwagon and #MEATEASY, I’d been eagerly anticipating new incarnation Meat Liquor’s advertised opening day of the 11.11.11. However it was a tweet from Hollow Legs that alerted me to the fact that they had secretly opened early today. I work nearby so off I went to scope the place out. (more…)

Ah the Plan 9 Space and Time Cafe in Maida Vale… being very conveniently located around the corner from me, their breakfast rolls and fry ups have on many a weekend morning (after a big night out) been my saviours! This tiny American style cafe offers a range of tasty treats: cakes, brownies, cookies, bagels, sandwiches, pancakes and various imported goodies from the States.

In my opinion the breakfast rolls at this American style cafe are the star items on their menu. They use good quality bacon and sausages from Biggles served inside a soft white roll. Combine that with one of their fresh fruit smoothies and you’ve got yourself an instant hangover cure! (more…)

After getting tanked up to our eyeballs with caffeine at The London Coffee Festival over the weekend, we decided it would probably be wise to go for some lunch. Enter Kêu! Vietnamese for “That’s Fantastic!” and specialists in that fine Vietnamese baguette sandwich people just love to get obsessive about, bánh mì. Recently opened in Old Street, Shoreditch the owner also boasts neighbouring restaurants Cây Tre and Viet Grill under his belt.
