A Tribute to Wellington Coffee

23 Jan 2011

It’s a lazy, grey Sunday in London and I’m feeling slightly ropey from a party last night.  Coffee is a big theme for today so what could be a better time to look back at the lovely coffee I drank in New Zealand than now?

I like coffee.  I can distinguish good coffee from bad coffee.  But when it comes to describing all the nuances of various coffee fragrances I must admit I don’t possess a cultured enough palate.

However in London there are 2 particular flavours which are seem to be most prevalent to me when it comes to coffee… burnt or watery.  Sorry London, I love you but your coffee is terrible!  How so many Londoners are happy to drink such bad coffee I shall never understand! *cough* Any large coffee chain in London *cough*

Of course there are also many amazing independent cafes in London that do make excellent coffee, but you really have to know where they are – I have maps to these fine establishments burned into my mind.

I’ve been particularly spoilt, being raised amongst the famous cafe culture of New Zealand’s capital city.  It’s generally pretty difficult to find a bad coffee there.  I certainly made the most of our wonderful cafes during my holiday and it really is too good to pass by without a mention, so here is my little tribute to all the coffee I enjoyed at various locations around Wellington.

Dining in Greytown

22 Jan 2011

On the same day we visited Martinborough for it’s wineries and olive groves, we spent our meal times dining in the neighbouring town of Greytown.  We had heard good things about Greytown in terms of shopping and food.  As well as being home to renown artisan bakery The French Baker and chocolate specialists Schoc, there are also a number of decent restaurants and cafes.

For lunch we dropped into Main Street Deli and Cafe located on… you guessed it, Main Street.

Kiwi Ice Creams

17 Jan 2011

Ah the sacrifices I make for this blog… spending my holiday in the New Zealand sunshine shovelling down unspeakable numbers of calories all for the sake of what I hoped would be a nice blog post!  Perhaps someday I’ll look back at this post and think “mmmmmm”.  But for now all I feel is slightly ill as I come to the realisation that every single ice cream pictured in this post was consumed by myself in a relatively short space of time.

In this post I present to you offerings from a few of New Zealand’s most popular ice cream manufacturers:

Double Cheese Sizzlers

2 Jan 2011

First post of the New Year so how about we start things off with a bang(er)?  You might call me a “foodie” (not that I’m particularly fond of the term) but definitely not a “food snob”.  In fact there are many things that would prove to you my blatent lack of food snobbery.  This is merely one of them.

Sizzlers are a range of sausages sold in New Zealand containing both dubious qualities and quantities of meat.  From the ingredients list: “Meat including Pork 43%”.  What they mean exactly when they say “including” is not something that’s advisable to spend too much time considering.

Kapiti’s Kikorangi Blue Cheese

19 Dec 2010

Kikorangi is by far my favourite blue cheese of all time.  Produced by Kapiti (known in New Zealand for their decadent range of cheeses and ice creams), this cheese is made with triple cream resulting in rather sumptuous, rich and creamy flavours and an almost buttery texture… *sigh*  If only I could take some back to London with me…
