Thai Rice

After a gruelling 30-something hour journey from Wellington back to London I was in no state to face the supermarket, let alone cook.  So we decided to grab some dinner locally in Maida Vale.  Being a short walk from my house, Thai Rice is my current “go to” place for a decent Thai takeout but we thought it would be nice to eat in the restaurant for a change.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting with very modern decor.  Being quite woozy from my flight, I wasn’t in the best state to make reliable decisions and instead of ordering beer by the pint we opted to have it served in a large ice cooled barrel.  It was fun but perhaps a little too fun (and slightly embarrassing) for our little table when I was in such a zonked out mood.  It made the experience a little surreal and every time I looked at it I felt quite dazed!

Sights and Tastes of the North Island: Part 2

Continuing on from my previous blog post I bring you more lovely scenery and food from my North Island road trip.

Day 3: Tauranga to Mahia

On our way to Gisborne we passed by the volcano known as White Island.  Despite being one of the world’s most accessible active volcanos, it wasn’t doing anything particularly exciting as we passed by.

Upon reaching Gisborne we opted for a Thai meal for dinner at Just Thai.

Here we discovered Mata Feijoa Beer.  Feijoa is a very popular fruit in New Zealand and you can find all manner of feijoa flavoured foodstuffs from feijoa vodka to feijoa chocolate.

The beer was light and refreshing with some very subtle hints of feijoa.

Moving onto the food… it was mostly good.  Simple and tasty.  A few misses but mostly hits.  We were happy and that’s the main thing.
